Hearing Instruments

A hearing instrument is a device that amplifies sound to improve the hearing of a person who has hearing difficulties. But this is not a simple task. Many complex issues need to be considered into play, including the physiology and psychoacoustics of the hearing mechanism and technology related to signal processing.

Hearing instruments amplify sound (make sound louder) in the frequencies affected by the hearing loss. For example, predominantly high-frequency amplification is applied for a patient with a high-frequency loss. The major function of a hearing instrument is to allow the user with a mild to profound hearing loss to hear speech and essential environmental sounds.
